Through direct services, education, legal and policy advocacy, and programs promoting economic self-sufficiency, Mommy’s Heart helps survivors access justice, rebuild stability, strengthen their independence, and move forward safely.

Position Title: Volunteer Squarespace Web Designer & Website Maintenance Specialist

Duration: Project-based; approximately 3–5 weeks, with timeline and milestones agreed upon at the start.

Location: Remote.

Volunteer Opportunity Description:

Are you an experienced Squarespace web designer who enjoys making websites polished, responsive, and easy for teams to maintain? Mommy’s Heart is seeking a volunteer to refine and troubleshoot our existing website, across desktop and mobile views.

Our site is already live, but certain page elements—including buttons, text boxes, and content blocks—overlap or appear incorrectly on some screen sizes. We need a detail-oriented Squarespace specialist to fix these layout glitches, improve consistency, and ensure visitors can navigate the site easily.

The volunteer will also update selected page content and adjust a dropdown associated with a button or menu item in the main navigation. Mommy’s Heart will provide the requested wording, page-by-page priorities, and feedback on changes.

Our priority is a clean, reliable site that nontechnical staff can continue editing. Please use Squarespace’s built-in editor, styling, navigation, and responsive layout tools wherever possible, with minimal custom code and no unnecessary third-party dependencies.

Responsibilities:

As Volunteer Squarespace Web Designer & Website Maintenance Specialist, you will make targeted improvements to our existing site. Responsibilities may include:

  • Responsive Layout Repairs: Find and fix overlapping buttons, boxes, text, images, and other elements across desktop and mobile screen sizes.
  • Squarespace Design Adjustments: Correct block positioning, spacing, alignment, padding, section sizing, and visual consistency using native Squarespace editing tools.
  • Navigation Update: Modify the specified main-navigation dropdown/button behavior and links so the menu is clear and functional on both desktop and mobile.
  • Content Updates: Revise text and other approved content on a small number of designated pages while preserving the organization’s messaging and branding.
  • Functional Testing: Check buttons, links, forms, menus, and relevant page interactions; repair identified glitches within the agreed scope.
  • Mobile Optimization: Review key pages on common mobile widths as well as desktop, ensuring readability, accessible tap targets, and no clipped or overlapping content.
  • Collaborative Review: Document issues, prioritize fixes with our team, and share changes for review before finalizing.
  • Minimal-Code Approach: Avoid extensive CSS, JavaScript, or custom templates; clearly document any small code changes that are genuinely necessary.
  • Project Handoff: Provide a concise list of completed changes, remaining issues if any, and instructions for updating affected pages without coding.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated proficiency designing and troubleshooting live Squarespace websites; examples of previous Squarespace work required.
  • Experience with Squarespace’s built-in page editor, responsive layouts, site styles, navigation settings, and content blocks.
  • Ability to diagnose and correct overlapping or misplaced elements in desktop and mobile views.
  • Strong eye for typography, spacing, usability, visual hierarchy, and consistent website presentation.
  • Comfortable making content edits and updating menus, dropdowns, buttons, and internal links.
  • Commitment to minimal custom coding so nontechnical volunteers can maintain the site independently.
  • Ability to work carefully on a live website, coordinate approvals, meet agreed milestones, and communicate clearly.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Mommy’s Heart.

Expected Deliverables:

  • A documented review of the priority layout and functionality issues on desktop and mobile.
  • Corrected overlapping or misplaced buttons, boxes, text, and other page elements on agreed pages.
  • Updated content on selected pages using wording approved by Mommy’s Heart.
  • A corrected main-navigation dropdown/button and verified destination links.
  • A final desktop/mobile quality check of the updated pages and key buttons, forms, and links.
  • A brief change log and simple, nontechnical handoff instructions for future edits.

Compensation and Required Resources:

This is an unpaid volunteer opportunity. No salary or stipend is offered. The volunteer should have access to their own computer and internet connection and use the existing Squarespace platform and authorized site access provided by Mommy’s Heart. Any proposed paid tool or expense must be approved in advance.

Benefits:

  • Use your Squarespace expertise to strengthen a nonprofit serving survivors and children.
  • Build a meaningful website-improvement project for your portfolio, subject to organizational approval.
  • Help make an important community resource more accessible and easier to navigate.
  • Collaborate with a dedicated, multidisciplinary nonprofit team.
  • Receive professional recognition and, where appropriate, a letter of recommendation.
  • Enjoy remote work and flexible scheduling within agreed project milestones.

How to Apply:

Please email your résumé or brief professional background, examples or links to Squarespace websites you have built or improved, and a short statement of interest to julianne@mommysheartinc.org.

Please include your availability and a brief description of your experience fixing responsive layout problems while keeping Squarespace sites editable without coding.

Join Mommy’s Heart and help ensure our website is welcoming, reliable, and easy for families and volunteers to use.
